Decades of Creativity in St George
Nestled within the historic Pole Depot building on St Georges Road, the St George Creative Art and Craft Centre has been a cornerstone of artistic expression and community connection in Penshurst since 1975.

For half a century, our centre has remained steadfast in a singular mission: to provide an inclusive, welcoming, and affordable space where local residents can explore their creativity, learn new skills, and build lasting friendships.
The Early Years and Community Roots
Established in the late 1970s, the centre was born out of a growing grassroots desire for a dedicated local hub catering to adult education and fine crafts. From day one, the vision was to break down barriers to the arts, ensuring that anyone—regardless of prior experience—could pick up a brush, mould clay, or master a craft in a supportive, social environment.
Our spiritual and physical home is deeply tied to the heritage of the St George district. Operating out of the local Pole Depot site, our classes and workshops take place in an environment steeped in local history. Over the decades, the centre has embraced this heritage, serving as a living link between the architectural past of Sydney's southern suburbs and the modern creative expression of its residents.
A Historic Home: The Pole Depot
The true heartbeat of the centre has always been its people. Over the last 50 years, our classrooms have been shaped by passionate artists, master crafters, and dedicated community educators.

Among our most cherished figures was the late Daphne Kingston (1928–2019)—a renowned local artist, historian, and esteemed member of the Hurstville and Kogarah Historical Societies. For many years, Daphne brought her deep love of local history and fine art to our studios, teaching painting classes and inspiring generations of students to capture the character and historic streetscapes of Sydney’s southern suburbs.
Influential Tutors and Artistic Legacy
As the St George area has grown and evolved, so too has our community hub. While we have expanded our offerings—introducing everything from after-school art programs for children to specialized weekend workshops and social excursions—our core ethos has never wavered.

Our longevity, community impact, and dedication to cultural education have been formally acknowledged over the years through various community milestones and tributes within the Australian Parliament.
Recognition and Growth
Today, the St George Creative Art and Craft Centre stands as a proud testament to what a community can achieve when it champions the arts. Every November, our Annual Exhibition continues to showcase the incredible talent nurtured within our walls, proving that creativity has no age limit.
